Created by the American engineer from Stanford University this technique is also known as the psychological acupuncture and is getting more and more popular all over the world. It transforms the wide-spread understanding that psychotherapy takes for years to work if work at all by clearing phobias and other disorders in minutes. Today it is used as an effective solution to all sorts of emotional or physical problems, allergies, addictions, weight loss, eye-sight improvement and peak performance in any sphere of life. It takes minutes to apply and helps us deal with stress and negative emotions in a new, painless way.
Our bodies have 14 energy channels or meridians which carry fine energy or electricity around the body. It is the same kind of energy which is registered by the electrocardiographs or electroencephalographs. Some 5000 years ago the ancient Chinese had discovered and mapped these meridians and the active points where they would apply their needles in order to stimulate the flow of “chi” or life energy and heal their patients. The major discovery of Gary Craig is that “the cause of all the negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system” unlike the traditional therapies that treat the upsetting memory.
Applying the technique or the so called Basic recipe is done by tapping the end points of these 14 meridians while tuned into the negative emotion or physical discomfort and naming it. Tapping harmonizes the body's energy system and the emotion or the discomfort quickly disappear. Based on the Basic recipe Gary Craig developed several techniques: the Movie Technique, the Tearless Trauma Technique, the Tell The Story technique and so on. After using them people experience dramatic changes in their emotional and physical health and these changes are permanent.
Emotional Freedom Techniques ® or EFT is part of the so called Energy Psychology and is being described as one of the most important breakthroughs in the area of mind-body healing in the last hundred years. Already thousands of people all over the world have benefited from using EFT and it is rapidly becoming known as a modern day miracle due to its radical release of emotional disturbances and physical ailments.
EFT's exceptional advantage is its simplicity – easy to learn by anybody this technique is quick to apply at any time and in any situations – a true freedom on our fingertips! As Gary Craig says:
“Try it on everything! It works when nothing else does!”
History of EFT
In 1964, chiropractor George Goodheart started exploring the connection between muscle strength, organs, glands and meridians and developed muscle testing, later naming it Applied Kinesiology. One of his students, John Diamond, saw the potential for using the balancing effect of meridian work for psychotherapy. Another psychologist, Dr Roger Callahan started a whole new approach combining meridian work with mental health.
In 1980, Dr Callahan had a patient with severe water phobia that caused her headaches and nightmares. She felt that bad when it rained that she had to draw the curtains. She could not take a bath either. To seek help she had been going from therapist to therapist for years with no material improvement. Even Dr Callahan could not help her using the conventional methods for a year and a half. Until one day he decided to experiment: out of curiosity, as he had been studying the body's energy system, he tapped under the eye of the patient. To his astonishment she exclaimed "It's gone!" and raced down to the nearby swimming pool and started throwing water in her face! From this moment Dr Callahan devoted his efforts to developing a treatment approach that would treat any mental problems and phobias through use of meridian stimulation and the order and sequence of the stimulation of acu-points was diagnosed through muscle testing for individual problems.
Gary Craig was a successful businessman and a student of Dr Callahan. His realization that one's self-esteem and quality of life is directly related to the person's emotional health drew him to seek and learn throughout his life the best available personal performance techniques. As an engineer he had a pragmatic approach – the personal performance tool had to work in real life just like when you switch on the TV set it should work. In 1996, he had the brilliant idea of creating a simple technique that would cover all 14 meridians and could be self-applied. This new technique removed the need for extensive muscle testing and diagnostic training that used to require a lot of time. He created EFT – a therapeutic tool which is unprecedented in its ease of use, and its astonishing effectiveness.
Gary Craig, who is now retired, literally gave his creation as a gift to the world – through his website www.emofree.com he offered a detailed EFT Manual together with a wide database of information about its application.
